I know I have been a little MIA lately. I took some time this summer to stay local for a couple months to decipher what my body was telling me and listen to what she needs. The most I could do was two months though, so I took off for a few weeks and now I’m back.
Life has been fun, and harsh, and filled with impatience as I wait to hear news that will change and heal my heart in ways I’m a little afraid to acknowledge.
Between all the traveling, healing, eating the best food, and meeting up with friends I’d only ever met online, I forgot this incredible project was finally going to be out in the world!
“Let the Black Women Say Ase'” is out to the world today!
I first got connected with the Aya Collective back when the pandemic had just started. I didn’t know then that through this incredible organization I would now be part of this anthology!
“Let the Black Women Say Ase'” is a collection of essays, poetry, and stories written by Black women in the diaspora and I can tell you now that it is a sacred book.
I never set out to be a writer, so any time my work is published anywhere I’m always taken aback. To be in this book is quite an honor and a blessing I wasn’t anticipating.
If you’d like to support this project you can buy it here! (Or on amazon)
Let me know if you do!
Thank you for reading all my ramblings!
Fun facts:
I am so very thankful for the leadership of Ebony Adedayo who faithfully leads the Aya Collective and got this project off the ground!
I got connected with the Aya Collective because they held a virtual conference where Dr. Christena Cleveland was the keynote speaker. I did not think it would lead me here!
One of my favorite people on this planet, June Price, also has a piece in this book. She has been like a mom to me, and mentor and the voice of Spirit and wisdom when I was more than a little lost.
I quote this song in my essay - Negro Con Sabor by Peru Negro if you want to listen to it.
I still can’t believe this is real because I haven’t held the physical copy yet! I might do a little giveaway on my Instagram though. You can follow me here: @dearkarla
Unrelated fun fact: I recently had a piece published on Geez Magazine’s “Healing Sex” issue - you can get a copy here!
